Long Distance Decor – Courtyards

July 20, 2012 By Vidya 5 Comments

Courtyards are outdoor living spaces that are open to the sky and enclosed within a building. The open area brings in more light into the home and creates better air circulation throughout. Today’s courtyards have adapted to new lifestyles transforming into a relaxing lounging space.

I came across a great landscape designing company in Australia, the Secret Gardens of Sydney and couldn’t help sharing their amazing work. This modern garden courtyard in the Eastern suburbs is designed to meet the needs of the home owners and their 3 children. With timber platforms, steps, and built in seating it sure is kid friendly.

Another beautiful one designed by the same company. Secret Gardens revamped the courtyard to match the more contemporary interior of the home. With an outdoor eating/cooking area, a pool, and tropical plants this courtyard ranks high in terms of style and function.

Courtyards are believed to have originated in ancient Iranian and Chinese homes.  Here is a traditional Chinese courtyard at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

As you can see the modern glam versions are a far cry from the humble origins of this space.

Courtyards (known as nalukettu) are also an integral part of a traditional Kerala (my home state in India) home. The courtyard in this renowned traditional home, the Narikottillam, hosts the sacred ‘thulasi thara’.

No, this is not just an international phenomena. Found a great one right here in the Good Ol’ USA. In this Spanish revival style home in Los Angeles the courtyard houses a stone pathway, a fountain, and lush greenery.

Want to have one for yourself? Enjoy having an outdoor oasis inside your home?

Have a great weekend!

Whenever I see them on Indian TV shows *that my mom watches* I fall in love with the courtyard and wonder why none of the houses I’ve ever been to in India have them.. Love these open spaces in the middle of the house..so open yet so private..
