DIY Vases

How have you all been? Been miserable the last few days. I’m having the worst allergy season ever. Still didn’t deter me from finally doing some yard work on Sunday. But couldn’t take the after pics as it totally rained out by the end of the day. Will try to take pics in the evening and post tomorrow. Meanwhile this is what I’ve been up to, making DIY vases from old bottles.

Any guesses as to what those bottles are?

Starbucks Frappuccino bottles! B bought a full box of them from Costco two weeks ago. After seeing a ton of painted Mason jar projects on Pinterest I’ve been saving up every glass bottle/jar that I come across. So it was no big surprise that these didn’t end up in my recycle bin.

These are pretty simple projects that really don’t need any instructions. For the gold striped vase I used left over Rust-oleum Metallic Gold spray paint from the tribal bowl project and painter’s tape.

Once the paint dries, remove the painter’s tape (the first layer is actually a bandage; not a great idea still it worked) and you’ll be left with this;

For the multi colored one, I used whatever acrylic paints (from Michaels)  I could find in my craft supplies.

You know I love that color combo (used it here too). Just swirl the bottle around so that you get even coverage. Stop when you like the pattern. If you feel that a particular color is not enough you could add more of it. No strict rules. It is a very forgiving project.

Tap the bottle onto a piece of newspaper to get the excess paint out. Let it dry at least for 48 hrs. The exact drying time depends on how thick your layer of paint is. You could use it as is for silk flowers. For real flowers you would need to protect your layer of paint with a layer of Mod Podge. Again use an ample amount of Mod Podge and make sure it coats every bit of paint in the bottle. Else water will enter through any pores/ air bubbles in the paint and get in between  the paint and the glass surface causing the paint layer to loosen up. I skipped the Mod Podge step as I plan to use this vase for silk flowers. The salvia in the pics is only for the photo shoot.

Have you tried painting glass bottles? Any other ideas? I have so many of these bottles left that I could try every glass painting trick there is. 🙂
