We’ve never had a formal foyer in either of our houses. Our first house had a tiny hallway with just enough room for two people to move around. Our current home has a foyer like space flanked by the living and office rooms. The only space to decorate is the small wall opposite the front door. That’s where we have the Buddha, mirror, and vintage crate vignette. When one of the readers reached out to me about ideas on decorating a grand foyer I thought today might be a good day to talk about foyers. All pics courtesy Houzz.
A foyer or entry way is the place where your guests would get a taste of the inside of your home for the first time. Ideally a warm and welcoming foyer would have;
- A Mirror/mirrors so that your guests/you can have a quick look before you come in/run out the door. It also reflects light and makes the space feel larger.
- Console table – A place to keep your keys, mail etc when you come in the door.
- A chair for you or your guests to sit when they are removing/putting on shoes.
- A nice plush rug not only adds warmth but also protects your floors from all the dirt that gets dragged in.
- Chandelier – Adds drama to the space as well as the main source of light
- Table lamps for ambiance lighting
- Baskets/ Totes – catch all the clutter and shoes that tend to pile on at the entrance
- Art/ Personal mementos add a welcoming touch
The foyer below has all the traditional ingredients; the mirror, the console table with table lamps on either side, the large chandelier, the rug, and even a round foyer table next to the stairs.
The other type of traditional foyer is where the vignette is set against the often odd wall next to the stairs.

For a fun and casual vibe you can dress up that odd spot like this. Would have never thought of using banquet style seating in the foyer!
My personal favorite is this transitional style foyer. Love the wide rim round mirror, the mercury glass lamps, the baskets….everything.
The next foyer is all Hollywood glam. I’m dying to use their styling idea, a very large mirror and a light console table in front of it, somewhere!
