How to Remove and Store Wall Decals

September 30, 2015 By Vidya Leave a Comment

Wall decals are great if you want to change the look of a room in an instant or for rentals when your options for wall decor are limited. They are super easy to stick on the walls and come in a variety of options. I’ve used them in both my kids’ rooms. The best part is they come off the walls easily too so you can change out the decor any time you want. Recently we removed the much loved monkey decals from my son’s room. The decals were in excellent condition and I didn’t want them to go to waste. We plan on give them away in our community FB group in case someone with a monkey loving kid wanted to have them in his/her room. But for that you need to store them so that they can be re-used.

How to Remove and Store Wall Decals

I did some research online about the best way to store wall decals but came away with a lot of conflicting information. So I thought why not document the process over here.

  • Before you rush off to remove the decals keep a piece of wax paper, large enough for the entire decal to fit in, ready.
  • As expected first you need to remove them from the wall being as gentle as possible. Be careful when you come to the fragile joints. In my case this was where the thin tail attaches to the body. To ensure that I didn’t have any tears, I unstuck the entire body, stopped when I reached the part, and started at the tip of the tail removing from that end. One I reach the joint I gently pulled the decal from both sides with both hands.

  • Slowly transfer the decal onto the wax paper making sure that you don’t have any creases.

  • Continue on with more pieces of wax paper till you’ve removed all the decals. If your stencil is bigger than the width of the wax paper feel free to tape together 2 or more pieces of wax paper.

Easy peasy right? Have you used wall decals?
